I am NeoMeta* (Julia Shu(tkevych)), a transdisciplinary multimedia artist & practice-based researcher from Kyiv, temporary based in Barcelona. I was born in Ukraine, Zhytomyr, in 1997, and now I hold an MA in Art and Science with distinction from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London (Jun 2024).

My practice bridges Art, Science, Nature, and Technology (and Societies, & Land? & Water?) to explore the Interconnectedness of life, nonlife, and the systems that sustain them within the universal entropy. Working across sculpture, installation, sound, bio & computational arts and beyond, I create immersive experiences that treat Living, Discarded, and Digital Entities as Equal Collaborators (including humans).

While reimagining Waste as Material, I seek to foster Interspecies Kinship and reimagine the coexistence of both living and non-living entities (including all Humans and Others on planet Earth and beyond in Space) within shared ecosystems and towards balanced relationships based on reciprocity. Yet, I treat decay and death as a Natural flow of Time and as a part of Life itself.

Drawing on Scientific methodologies and Indigenous knowledge, NeoMeta envisions inclusive futures rooted in empathy, care, and ecological harmony.

Key Themes & Practice Areas:

  • Interspecies Kinship & Communication
    Exploring connections between humans and nonhumans through sound, behavioural patterns, and interaction within contemporary NatureCulture / CultureNature (links to my research works below)

  • Post-Natural & Phygital Realms
    Merging physical and digital realms to create experiential works where living, found, and digital entities thrive (selected exhibitions below)

  • Eco Art & Environmental Advocacy
    Addressing climate change and ecological restoration through multimedia art & science projects and collaborative platforms that inspire action (e.g. Others.place)

* NeoMeta – my artist name symbolizing the fusion of artistic expression and scientific inquiry; from Greek "neo" – new, "meta" – beyond, transcending.
More in my Manifesto.

** PS: Fun fact(s) about me:
1. I'm very neurodivergent and also have dyspraxia, but I don't really have any moving difficulties as I use navigator on my phone;
2. I love making and feel confident with metalwork + welding, woodwork, optical microscopy, projection mapping, physical computing (robotics, AR/VR and more!), light and sound direction, as well as music making and caring for plants and my doggie; her name is Emi, and she's 11 years old!;
3. love recording both Nature and Culture and Technology & occasionally Society;
4. I don't really hate anything. But I don't like potatoes and onions, and I'm afraid of inexplicable human aggression (e.g. war in Ukraine or any other part of the globe).
5. I love (almost) everything. In fact, I'm very genderqueer, and Found Love Hapilly. Happy to Collaborate if we can feel the vibe (and if We Both have Time...);
6. I believe Art is Priceless, same as Land, Innovations, People and all living & non-living entities. Sadly, people still need funds to Live. PS: I'm a sapio sapiens... Sapiencia!

Mission (my)

Support the rights of Nature, Culture, Technology, Societies, and Beyond (Earth) so We all can co-live within Shared Ecosystems of Land & Sea based on Reciprocity and Balance.

PS: Nature before Humans regenerated/regulated itself.

I seek to foster Interspecies Kinship and reimagine the coexistence of both living and non-living entities while treating Them as Equal Collaborators as Us (including humans).
